Images of America, Portsmouth, Virginia
Written by Dr. Robert Brooks Albertson, a founding member of
the first OTCL Foundation Board. Originally published in 2002 to celebrate the
250th anniversary of Portsmouth, and now in its third printing. Covering almost
400 years of history in Portsmouth with many vintage photos. Dr. Albertson is
so committed to the mission of the Foundation, that he designated all profits
from this book
go to the Foundation and
be restricted solely for preservation projects. This very generous gift
has
allowed the Foundation to build upon its original seed funds. The
Foundation's goal for these funds is
to apply for matching grants for specific preservation projects.
Anyone
may designate a gift to this fund with the same restriction. Should you
specify, donations to the Foundation can be earmarked for
specific projects.
About the Author-I am a Portsmouth native, having my permanent address for
my whole life at the same home in Olde Towne. Those who grew up in Portsmouth
will recognize the places where I received my early education: Green Street
School, Briggs School, Harry Hunt Junior High, and Woodrow Wilson High School.
My higher education includes a B.A. in History from Old Dominion College in
1969 as well as two further degrees from Old Dominion University: an M.B.A. in
1978 and a Ph.D. in Urban Services in 1993. I have recently been nominated to
WHO'S WHO AMONG AMERICA'S TEACHERS for the third consecutive time. I am a
Professor of Management, Business, and Economics at Virginia Wesleyan College.
In December of 2004 I completed nine years as chair of the Social Sciences
Division of the college, and this January I began a serving as Associate Dean
of the College.
A good part of my life has been spent trying to preserve and
promote Portsmouth's historic heritage. I was a founding member of the Olde Towne
Civic League and its second President.
